Indigenous Relations

Trans-Northern Pipelines Inc. (TNPI) has developed an Indigenous Relations Policy to ensure the company’s Indigenous relations are supported by a consistent approach that is based in collaboration, transparency, trust, and mutual respect. TNPI’s commitment is understood to be a shared responsibility between TNPI and Indigenous communities where we operate. 

Our Policy is in line with our commitment to reconciliation and is grounded in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada Call to Action #92.  

All TNPI leaders, managers, employees, and contractors are responsible for upholding the principles of this Policy.  

TNPI recognizes and respects the diversity of Indigenous Peoples and appreciates the many unique Indigenous cultures, languages, and values in Canada. 

Our Policy’s guiding principles

  • TNPI establishes, strengthens, and maintains strong, collaborative relationships with Indigenous communities where we operate based on trust, transparency, and mutual respect.
  • TNPI progresses reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples through the development and implementation of a Reconciliation Action Plan.
  • TNPI acts in the spirit of reconciliation to work with, and learn from, Indigenous Peoples and communities within our operating area.
  • TNPI ensures that our consultation and engagement activities meet or exceed regulatory requirements.
  • TNPI strives to ensure Indigenous communities understand our operations within each Indigenous community’s traditional territory. 
  • TNPI seeks ways to help understand and mitigate potential impacts through the sharing of information and open dialogue with Indigenous communities.
  • TNPI provides ongoing Indigenous cultural awareness training to ensure our leadership, management, and employees understand Indigenous cultures and Canadian history as it relates to Indigenous Peoples.
  • TNPI provides Indigenous Peoples equitable access to employment and training at TNPI.
  • TNPI recognizes that each Indigenous community is different with unique interests and needs.
  • TNPI respects Indigenous Peoples’ unique cultures and knowledge systems, and is committed to valuing Indigenous ways of knowing, ways of being, and ways of doing.
